It’s that time of year when everyone starts to create plans and goals for the year ahead. Where we take the time to look at what we’ve done over the past 365 days and how we want to improve our lives in the next 365 days.
As part of that process have you ever looked at your social media successes and wondered why some people have amazing success but it hasn’t been that way for you? In this article, I’ll look at the number one reason I see time and time again that are holding businesses back from social media success.
Do you have a plan for how your business will use social media?
Do you know what you will be posting next month, next week or even tomorrow?
I often meet with business owners who aren’t having success with social media and they don’t know why. When we take a look at what they’ve been doing the biggest issue is they are all over the place. One month they might only post twice, the next month ten times and the third month not at all.
When I ask why their posting is all over the place and there doesn’t seem to be consistent posting the answer 99% of the time is that they have no time to post. If the approach you take to social media is that you’ll work on it when you have time let’s be honest that means it likely won’t happen. As business owners, we have many items on our to-do list, and some days we can’t get through them all. If that’s the case how do you ever expect to have time for something that isn’t even on the list?
Let’s change this example a bit, and let’s say your goal for 2017 is to get in better shape so you sign up for a gym membership. In Jan you go to the gym twice, February ten times and March is crazy busy so you don’t find the time to go. Now would you wonder why you aren’t in better shape? Probably not because you’d realized you didn’t put in the time at the gym to get results.
Social media is no different if you don’t make time to put up posts, create content, engage with your online community you can’t expect it to generate awareness, leads, and sales for your business. If you don’t put in the time and get consistent with your social media channels you won’t see success. There are 20 million business pages on Facebook just being on the platform gets you nowhere if you aren’t using it effectively.
If you want to use social media to drive business for you in 2017 I highly suggest that you put aside time to work on your social media channels to create content, to post and to engage.
Now don’t worry I’m not one to just tell you what you’re doing wrong and not help you do better.
